A dumpling squishy can be a tiny bao bun to carry around, a sparkly glitter dumpling, or a mystery dumpling that keeps its design hidden until you open it. Choosing one comes down to three things: the size, the kind of squish you enjoy, and whether you would rather pick the design yourself or leave it as a surprise. This guide walks through each one using the dumplings in the Moonomi range.
Safety first
Not suitable for children under 3 years. Contains small parts.
This applies to every product in this guide. Every dumpling squishy here is Age 3+. Always check the packaging for full age and safety information before use.
Start with size
Moonomi dumpling squishies come in four sizes, from tiny to hand-filling.
The Kawaii Foodiez Mini Bao 3-Pack is the smallest option, with three 4.5cm bao buns in one pack. They are pocket-sized and easy to share, swap or keep together as a little set.
The Wizz Glitter Dumpling 5.5cm is a mini glitter style from Wizz Toys. The Small Bao Bun 7cm sits in its own mini steamer basket, which makes it easy to display on a shelf or desk.
Most of the range is 8.5cm. That includes the Giggletastic Bao Buddies 8.5cm, the Glitter Bao Bun Maltose Dumpling 8.5cm, the RMS Glitter Dumpling 8.5cm, the Kawaii Foodiez Ombre Dumpling and the RMS Diamond Edition Mystery Dumpling. At this size there is more to squeeze, and a single dumpling makes a good centrepiece for a gift or a collection.
Choose your kind of squish
Dumpling squishies broadly fall into two feels. The first is soft and slow-rising: you press it down and it gradually returns to shape. The Giggletastic Bao Buddies, the Kawaii Foodiez Ombre Dumpling and the RMS Diamond Edition Mystery Dumpling are all soft and slow-rising.
The second is stretchy and gooey. The Glitter Bao Bun Maltose Dumpling and the Wizz Glitter Dumpling are filled with stretchy maltose-style goo, which gives them a squeeze-and-pull feel. They are not edible, however much they look like a snack.
The RMS Glitter Dumpling 8.5cm sits between the two. It is packed with glitter, and you can squish it, stretch it and watch it slowly bounce back.
Look and finish
If appearance matters most, think about the finish. The RMS Glitter Dumpling, the Glitter Bao Bun Maltose Dumpling and the Wizz Glitter Dumpling all sparkle with glitter. The Kawaii Foodiez Ombre Dumpling fades from one pastel colour to another for a softer look. The Giggletastic Bao Buddies have a smiley face, and each one comes in its own steamer basket.
Colours and designs are sent at random across the range, so part of the fun is seeing which one you get. If you are building a small collection, mixing finishes gives a shelf or desk display more variety.
Classic, Rare or Diamond?
Moonomi uses three grades. Classic means an everyday favourite from the core range. Rare means a special finish, such as glitter or see-through jelly. Diamond is the top tier, with premium finishes.
The RMS Glitter Dumpling 8.5cm, the Glitter Bao Bun Maltose Dumpling 8.5cm and the Wizz Glitter Dumpling 5.5cm are graded Rare. The RMS Diamond Edition Mystery Dumpling is graded Diamond.
Mystery or choose your own
If you know the style you want, a named dumpling lets you choose the size and feel before adding it to your basket. If the surprise is part of the fun, the RMS Diamond Edition Mystery Dumpling comes sealed in its own steamer basket, so you won't know which design you have until you open it.
For gifts, a pair works well. One soft, slow-rising dumpling and one stretchy glitter style give two different squishes to compare. For more on surprise formats, read the squishy mystery box guide.
Quick answers
What is the difference between a bao and a dumpling squishy?
At Moonomi, “dumpling squishy” is the name for the whole family. Bao buns are the round, pleated bun style, often sitting in a mini steamer basket. Glitter, ombre and mystery dumplings are other styles in the same range.
What does slow-rising mean?
A slow-rising squishy returns to its shape gradually after you squeeze it, rather than springing straight back.
Can I choose the colour?
No. Colours and designs are sent at random, so every dumpling is a little surprise.
